How did the ART WORLD get so screwed up? Here are some answers. (The World)
by artist Arthur Robins.

Many artists for a long time have been wondering how and why the 'Art World" got the way it is. Most artists are amazed and confused. They can't understand how to relate to an art world that seems to have no rhyme or reason, and worse, no place for them! How is it that a place that should be open exciting revelatory and free be a closed hellish fake trite nightmare? While i don't have all the answers, i would like to share some answers that i do have.

First, about me. I am a full time fine artist, who has been making a living as an artist exclusively for 21 years. I have shown in galleries, museums and public places, and my work has been collected worldwide (over 50 countries). I have been studying the 'art world' for over 35 years. it is not quite what it appears to be. Here is the problem:

1. Unlike every other business in the entire world, you don't have to know a thing about the subject, art, to open up a gallery. You only need money for the space, and no inventory, since artists will come by the thousands to your door, unasked. Wealthy bored people open galleries to look glamorous and sophisticated. It impresses their friends. Other wealthy people do it for tax write offs. Gangsters and criminals do it for money laundering. And a variety of people do it because they like 'art' or what they think is art.

2. There is absolutely no regulation of what a gallery should be, or what is good or bad art. There are no standards. Unlike EVERY OTHER ART FORM IN THE ENTIRE WORLD, nobody will stand up and say THIS ART IS TERRIBLE. They'll do it with singers (American Idol) they do it with writers (New York Times Book Review), they do it with Plays and Film and Music and Comedy and Dance and every SINGLE other art form, except fine art.("Fine Art reviewers' are 'yes'-lackies writing utter nonsense to maintain their 'job'. They write gobbeldy-gook nonsense.)

3. Because of the non existent standards, every single half brain moron who can scribble or dribble paint thinks his or her art is great, when most likely it ISN'T. And every imbicile gallery owner who is also lame will more likely than not choose very bad art to be in their gallery. You yourself can testify to that.

4. We have 100,000 artists in NY. And we have 300-400 galleries. Most gallery owners are either incredibly stupid, or ignorant, as are most so-called 'artists'. So now we have a very serious problem.

5. "Insider Trading" in Wall street is punishable by PRISON TIME. In the Art World, it is the normal mode of business. Museums are known for buying up an artist's work and then promoting the heck out of him or her. They tell their major contributors which artist they are buying up so THEY can get in on it too. This is how many artists were made. MANY. In fact if you heard of them, most likely, they were in this game.

6. Because there is no regulation of the art world, and no standard of quality, unlike any other business or art form, any 'artist' who does any amount of pathetic ridiculous meaningless worthless art can make it BIG. Their worthless art can be manipulated to be worth millions. So many fakers and charlatans crowd the doorways of every art establishment, good or bad.

7.So now we have tens of thousands of 'artists' (100,000 in NYC alone) trying to squeeze into a couple hundred galleries. These galleries, regardless of their quality or intent, are so inundated with artists trying to get in, that they have now taken to charging artists for even submitting their crummy work to them, (just so that the gallery can say NO but keep the money!) or then continue to charge them to show, if the lucky artists are CHOSEN to do so.

8. In the real world, when a company collapses, goes bankrupt, dies, their stock becomes nothing. In the art world, when an artist (artist = art 'company') dies, the stock soars. That is why most galleries prefer to deal with 'dead' artists. Again, this upside down value system further corrupts the business and drives living artists absolutely insane.

9. Our culture has the nerve to depict artists as either crazy or irellevent. If they are crazy, it was the art world that made them so. They love to laugh about Van Gogh's ear being cut off, even though it was only a PIECE of his EARLOBE. But the real statement he had to make, which was profound, goes almost unrecognized to this day, regardless of how many people say how much they LOVE his work.

10. I will now give you ten seconds to name 10 living singers. Now name 10 living actors. Now name 10 famous rockers. Now 10 famous TV personalities. That was easy. Now name 10 living Fine Artists......? You can't do the last one. Because our culture has no respect for artists, fine artists. Why? Partially because of what i wrote above. Partially because the Art World has so SUCKTIFIED itself, that there is no respect for artists. And this is on purpose so that they can totally control it. Their total control allows them and only them to manipulate the market and sell totally meaningless worthless crap for millions.

11. When was the last time you saw an actor on a talk show talk about 'their' new film ? (Like it was even theirs!!!) Last week? OK. When was the last time you saw a half witted BALL player (any ball) on a talk show talk about whatever stupid thing was asked him? Last week? OK. Now when was the last time you saw an ARTIST on a talk show talk about their paintings or sculpture? This year? This decade?? EVER??? Now you see the kind of respect our culture REALLY has for us. Not much.

12. Along the streets of New York City are artists set up to show and sell their art. According to some figures there are between 1000 and 1500 of them. Do you see that many musicians out there? How about writers? Any actors doing little plays on street corners? I don't think so. Why only artists? Because we are treated with contempt by this culture-that is, unless we suck up to the devil, or die.
There is a lot more behind this. Is it a conspiracy? Yes. What is the solution? I don't exactly know. But unless you understand the problem, the solution is impossible. Email me your thoughts, ideas or comments.
